Opening Remarks of FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez: Privacy and the IoT: Navigating Policy Issues @ International Consumer Electronics Show

FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez addressed attendees of the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show on the critical role of security and privacy in the evolving Internet of Things.  Ms. Ramirez noted the explosive growth in the availability of connected devices and sensors being developed to improve our lives, and she warned about the potential security and privacy abuses associated with the massive amounts of data that would inevitably be collected.  Chairwoman Ramirez called for industry to adopt proactive measures to anticipate and deal with these issues, and highlighted the need for widespread adoption of “security by design” techniques by developers.
