"DDoS Attacks Jump 203 Percent, Patriotic Hacktivism Surges"

According to a new Radware report, the number of malicious Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks increased by 203 percent in the first six months of 2021. The report also emphasizes how Russia's invasion of Ukraine has shifted the threat landscape's focus from pandemic consequences to DDoS activity launched by patriotic hacktivists. Through the leaking of information, the performance of defacements, and the launch of DDoS attacks, both established and newly formed pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian cyber legions aimed to disrupt and create chaos. The first six months of 2022 saw a significant increase in DDoS activity around the world. Radware mitigated a volumetric carpet-bombing attack with a total volume of 2.9 PB in May 2022. The attack lasted 36 hours, with a peak attack rate of 1.5 Tbps and a sustained attack rate of over 700 Gbps for more than eight hours. This is one of the most significant DDoS attacks on record due to the combination of duration, volume, and average/sustained attack rates. Patriotic hacktivism increased dramatically in the first half of 2022. In 2022, DragonForce Malaysia, a hacktivist operation targeting Middle Eastern organizations in 2021, returned. Its recent political campaigns were in response to national events.
