"UVA Engineering Researcher Has Plan to Defeat the Next Big Cyberattack"
Ashish Venkat, an assistant professor of computer science and cybersecurity expert at the University of Virginia (UVA), has received a CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a hardware and software system that enables rapid and secure mitigation of cyberattacks, including zero-day events. Venkat's team will develop a "decoupled" security response, which involves designing a holistic security-centric hardware-software stack that will allow technicians to enter a computer system to fix a vulnerability via a separate security entrance, on-demand, and in the field. His system could help stop emerging zero-day cyberattacks within 24 to 48 hours, which is 13 days faster than the current average response time. The solution may also reduce the significant time and financial costs associated with frequent patching, redeployment, and hardware upgrades.
