"Leaky DICOM Medical Standard Exposes Millions of Patient Records"

According to researchers, around 60 million personal and medical records may have been exposed because of the use of a legacy protocol in medical equipment. Aplite researchers analyzed the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) protocol, an internationally recognized standard for medical imaging transfers used in most radiology, cardiology imaging, and radiotherapy settings. According to their research titled "Millions of Patient Records at Risk: The Perils of Legacy Protocols," which they will present at Black Hat Europe in London in December, users of the protocol often do not apply the security controls. This article continues to discuss the 30-year-old, rarely updated protocol that has exposed highly personal data due to a lack of proper security throughout owner environments.
