"Discovery Highlights 'Critical Oversight' in Perceived Security of Wireless Networks"

A team of researchers led by Rice University's Edward Knightly discovered an eavesdropping security vulnerability in high-frequency and high-speed wireless backhaul links. These links are widely used in applications such as 5G wireless cell phone signals. They are believed to be inherently secure because of their elevated positioning and highly directive millimeter-wave and sub-terahertz "pencil-beams." However, the team exposed a new interception technique involving a metasurface-equipped drone called "MetaFly." This article continues to discuss the discovery of a vulnerability in wireless backhaul networks for 5G and beyond.
