"A Deep Flaw in Your Car Lets Hackers Shut Down Safety"
In 2015, researchers performed a demonstration in which they hijacked a moving Jeep to manipulate its driving functions such as steering, accelerating, and breaking. Ever since this discovery, the auto industry has made attempts at preventing the hacking of connected cars with the implementation of intrusion detection systems (IDS). However, researchers have discovered a new vulnerability within vehicular internal networks that could be exploited by hackers to disable automated components such as air bags, anti-lock brakes, door locks, and other safety mechanisms, while also bypassing IDS. This article further discusses this vulnerability, suggestions to improve defense, and responses to this attack demonstration from automakers.
