"Monitoring 'Side Channels' to Detect Vehicle Hacks"
A research company by the name of HRL Laboratories has a contract with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop a way in which intrusions into a smart vehicle’s controller area network (CAN) bus can be detected. In addition to examining the data that passes through the CAN bus, side channels such as power, thermal, or electromagnetic emissions will also be monitored to detect intrusions. This article continues to discuss the inadequate security of a vehicle’s CAN bus and the method being developed by HRL to detect intrusions into this system, along with the research and challenges behind this method.
