In 1988, Robert Tappan Morris inadvertently performed a type of cyberattack that is now known as a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. The historic program, called the Morris worm, was the first of its kind, which slowed down large parts of the internet. Since the launch of this worm, DDoS attacks have continued to grow in frequency and severity.
