"Altered Data Sets Can Still Provide Statistical Integrity and Preserve Privacy"

The use of synthetic networks has been proposed as a way to satisfy research needs while preserving the privacy of individuals and institutions. Aleksandra Slavkovic, a professor of statistics and associate dean for graduate education, Eberly College of Science, Penn State, has focused her research on developing solutions in which confidential data can be shared among scientists without the risk of sensitive information being discovered. This article continues to discuss the use of data in research, the improvement of techniques aimed at linking data sets, the privacy risk posed by linkages between datasets, and the use of synthetic datasets.
