"Bolstering Internet Security"
Researchers at Princeton University, in collaboration with Let's Encrypt, developed a countermeasure against website counterfeiting, which has improved security for millions of websites since it went live on February 19. The countermeasure addresses a security hole identified by the Princeton researchers in 2017 that can be exploited by cybercriminals to obtain digital certificates. When cybercriminals fraudulently obtain these certificates, they can make phishing websites appear trustworthy, thus increasing the chances of fooling users into sending them personal information. Certificate authorities have relied on a single internet pathway in the validation process performed when digital certificates are issued. The countermeasure developed by researchers is said to be multi-perspective or multiple vantage verification as it adds internet pathways, bolstering the digital certificate issuance process and making it increasingly difficult for scammers to obtain digital certificates. This article continues to discuss the concept, support, and development of the Princeton-led countermeasure against website counterfeiting.
