"Google Voice Authentication Scam Leaves Victims on the Hook"

Google Voice sent out a warning to users to watch out for this new scam using Google Voice Authentication.  If you post your phone number or email online, for example on a marketplace or lost pet site, a scammer may call you on it and ask to send you a code that they have you repeat on a phone call—supposedly to verify that you are a person rather than a bot.  Actually, they are using this scheme to set up a Google voice number in your name that has already been authenticated to your Google account.  They use this fake number in your name to run other scams that, according to the FBI, can’t be traced back to the scammers. Google warns users not to share their authentication numbers with anyone.  Also don’t give out your email address to businesses you don’t know who call you on the phone.
