"Organizations Plagued by Identity Sprawl"

According to a new study, identity sprawl is a major issue for organizations, with 60 percent reporting as many as 21 separate identities per user. The report from Radiant Logic and Gartner Peer Insights examines the rapid growth of enterprise identity silos, as well as the resulting explosion of user information, attributes, and credentials. It reveals that 67 percent of respondents are aware of their identity sprawl but are unsure how to address it fully. Moreover, while 58 percent consider identity management to be critical, 61 percent believe it is too time-consuming and costly to manage effectively on an ongoing basis. Respondents report the most common negative impacts as increased technical debt (66 percent) and decreased employee productivity and morale (64 percent). According to the report, 84 percent of organizations reported an identity-related breach, with 67 percent experiencing one in the previous year. Furthermore, 71 percent of those polled do not have a budget set aside for identity-based projects, and 35 percent are concerned that they will be unable to protect their organization from identity-based security threats. Among these threats, 85 percent of those polled are concerned about users logging into personal applications using work credentials and have had little success in preventing it. According to 71 percent of the respondents, the most common user complaint about identity management is poor integration with new tools and applications, and getting help for these issues, which takes time and resources from support.
