"Congress Considers New Healthcare Cybersecurity Bill"

The Healthcare Cybersecurity Act of 2022 was recently proposed to Congress by US Senators. The purpose of this new legislation is to reduce cybersecurity attacks and data breaches in the healthcare and public health sectors. The plan is to establish stronger collaborative efforts between the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and the Homeland Security Department's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). According to the IBM Security X-Force Threat Intelligence Index 2022, healthcare is the sixth most targeted industry as it accounted for 5.1 percent of all attacks observed by X-Force in 2021. They discovered that most attacks on healthcare organizations (57 percent) were vulnerability exploits. Ransomware was also used more frequently in healthcare-related attacks than in other industries. Phishing came in third place, accounting for 29 percent of all attacks. The new bill defines each agency's role in the collaboration. It also specifies the actions that the CISA will take. It calls for healthcare worker training and outlines specific areas in which CISA will investigate during a thorough analysis. CISA will be required to conduct a detailed study on specific risks encountered by the healthcare industry, including how those risks impact healthcare assets, the challenges these organizations face today in securing updated information systems, and more. This article continues to discuss the Healthcare Cybersecurity Act of 2022 and the cybersecurity challenges facing the healthcare industry.
