"Healthcare Attackers Switch to Smaller Targets"

According to a new report from the Managed Detection and Response (MDR) provider Critical Insight, attackers have shifted their focus to smaller hospital systems and specialty clinics lacking a high level of security preparedness, staff size, or budget in the first half of 2022. This shift from large hospital systems and payers to smaller entities that truly lack cyber defenses demonstrates a significant shift in victims and approach. Attackers are expected to continue to target smaller entities for ease of attack, as well as to avoid media attention and escalated interventions by law enforcement. Among other findings, overall breaches have decreased since 2020, from a high of 393 in the first half of 2021 to 367 in the second half of 2021, 344 in the second half of 2021, and 324 in the first half of this year. This equates to approximately 20 million people impacted in the first half of 2022, representing the third consecutive quarter of declining numbers, a 10 percent decrease from the previous six-month period, and a 28 percent decrease from the first half of 2021. This article continues to discuss key findings from Critical Insight's 2022 Healthcare Data Breach Report.
