"Ransomware Gangs' Favorite Targets"

Barracuda released its fourth-annual threat research report, which examines ransomware attack patterns from August 2021 to July 2022. The top five industries for the 106 highly publicized attacks studied by Barracuda's researchers are education, municipalities, healthcare, infrastructure, and finance. The number of ransomware attacks increased yearly across all five industry verticals, with attacks against other industries more than doubling since last year's report. While municipal attacks increased only slightly over the past year, ransomware attacks on educational institutions more than doubled, and attacks on the healthcare and financial sectors tripled. This year, researchers delved deeper into highly publicized attacks to determine which other industries are being targeted. Service providers were hit the most, but ransomware attacks on automobile, hospitality, media, retail, software, and technology companies also increased. However, most ransomware attacks go unnoticed as they do not make headlines. Many victims choose not to disclose when they face an attack, and the attacks are often sophisticated and significantly difficult for small businesses to handle. This article continues to discuss key findings from Barracuda's fourth-annual threat research report.
