"N.C. A&T Researchers Awarded $9M DOD Grant for Cybersecurity, AI"

The US Department of Defense (DOD) Office of Naval Research (ONR) has awarded $9 million to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University researchers to investigate how to create trustworthy, reconfigurable, and secure Artificial Intelligence (AI) for cyber physical defense systems as well as diversify the AI and cybersecurity workforce. Over a five-year period, Kaushik Roy, Ph.D., interim chair of the Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering (COE), will lead the research as Principal Investigator (PI). The first thrust, led by Roy, will involve the development of algorithms and AI capable of understanding threats, mitigating risks, processing data quickly, and defending against virtual attacks. The second thrust, led by co-PI Sun Yi, will focus on human-inspired and "human on the loop" Al algorithms for networked autonomous robots via systematic decision-making processes. The third thrust, led by co-PI Daniel Limbrick will ensure that the microelectronic hardware and software developed in the first two thrusts are reliable and secure. This article continues to discuss the DOD-funded multi-thrust project aimed at improving AI and cybersecurity capabilities.
