"New Ransomware Groups Emerge but Overall Activity Slows"

According to GuidePoint Security research, eight new ransomware groups emerged in the last quarter, and at least one new ransomware group has emerged each month since January 2021. The GuidePoint Research and Intelligence Team (GRIT) report tracked 27 ransomware groups and 568 publicly posted victims in the third quarter of this year. The results indicate a slight slowdown in overall ransomware activity from the previous quarter. Although the manufacturing industry has seen an 18 percent decrease in public ransomware postings quarter over quarter, it remains the most impacted industry, tied with technology, which has seen a 20 percent increase in ransomware victims. LockBit continues to dominate Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) activity as it is still the most prolific ransomware group, accounting for 42 percent of all publicly posted ransomware victims and targeting 48 countries in Q3. Meanwhile, Hive's activity has skyrocketed, with a 104 percent increase in publicly posted victims. Of all reported Hive victims, 12.8 percent work in healthcare, which is more than double the rate of LockBit, which has 6.4 percent health sector victims. This article continues to discuss key findings from GuidePoint Security's new ransomware report.
