"DDoS Attack Against Minecraft Server was Largest Ever Seen by Cloudflare"

Cloudflare recently published a report on Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) threats in Q3 2022, and the most powerful attack of the quarter targeted a Minecraft gaming server. An individual or organization launched a 2.5 Tbps DDoS attack against the Wynncraft MMORPG Minecraft server using a Mirai botnet variant. According to Cloudflare, multi-terabit attacks are becoming more common, with its automated content protection and DDoS mitigation services responding to several attacks in Q3 that exceeded 1 Tbps. The Wynncraft targeted attack was the largest Cloudflare has ever seen in terms of bitrate, which makes one wonder about the motivations behind it. Minecraft is neither political nor concerned with state security. However, it appears to be a popular DDoS target during tournaments, where competitors compete for any possible competitive advantage. The Wynncraft server attack involved multiple vectors, including User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) data packet floods, according to Cloudflare. In addition, Cloudflare's report highlighted some key DDoS trends from the previous quarter, with some of the attacks appearing to be political in nature, such as the surges in attacks on Taiwanese and Japanese sites and institutions. This article continues to discuss the launch of a 2.5 Tbps DDoS attack against the Wynncraft MMORPG Minecraft server via a Mirai botnet variant.
