"CommonSpirit Confirms Ransomware Attack as US Hospitals Deal With Fallout"

CommonSpirit Health, one of the largest US nonprofit healthcare systems, has confirmed that it was the victim of a ransomware attack that caused widespread IT outages at hospitals across the country. According to a CommonSpirit Health spokesperson, staffers contacted law enforcement and hired cybersecurity specialists to deal with the response and contain the incident. Several electronic health record systems across the country were affected by the incident. Many of the organization's more than 1,000 care sites and 140 hospitals in 21 states reported widespread outages and computer system problems. Several facilities are reportedly unable to access patient history, and pharmacies are unable to verify orders or print official labels. In order to share prescriptions, some hospitals are now forced to use fax machines. This article continues to discuss the impact of the ransomware attack against CommonSpirit Health and the organization's response to the attack.
