"Malicious Android Apps Double in Q1 as Lockdown Users Are Targeted"

According to new data from the mobile technology company Upstream, the number of malicious Android Apps detected in the first quarter of 2020 doubles the number discovered last year during the same period. The company's Secure-D platform identified more than 29,000 malicious apps on the Google platform in Q1 2020. At some point, nine of the top 10 most downloaded malicious apps in Q1 2020 were available on the Google Play Store. Upstream revealed that 89% of the 326 million mobile transactions it processed were blocked because they were detected as fraudulent. Since most people are staying home due to the coronavirus outbreak, cybercriminals are taking advantage of the increased use of leisure apps such as games, social, video players, and more, to distribute malware and steal information.
