A malvertising campaign is suspected to be the cause of the ransomware attack that targeted UK universities and was able to be launched via a click to a site with the malware. Cybersecurity researchers at Proofpoint has identified this ransomware as Mole ransomware, which first emerged in April. Mole ransomware derived from file-encrypting software and is a member of the CryptoMix ransomware family.
