"WVU Tech Awarded Contract to Develop Soldier Cyber Readiness App"

The US Army Combat Capabilities and Development Command (DEVCOM) and the Civil-Military Innovation Institute (CMI2) awarded the West Virginia University Institute of Technology (WVU Tech), a seed project within the Pathfinder Program, in collaboration with researchers and the US military. WVU Tech will conduct knowledge and discovery tasks critical to building a queryable skillset application as an initial use case, focusing primarily on the novel skills, education, experience, and certifications required to complete cybersecurity missions assigned to the West Virginia Army National Guard (WVARNG). The Pathfinder program, executed by DEVCOM, aims to harness academic and government researchers' creativity and technical skills to assist the Army in integrating innovative solutions to real-world problems into the total force. The demand for qualified soldiers with civilian backgrounds in cybersecurity has grown in recent years as adversaries in the "Fifth Domain" of cyberspace have become increasingly malicious. The project will collect and analyze data from soldiers in order to help WVARNG leadership prepare soldiers with cybersecurity experience for a path to becoming qualified, experienced, and certified cybersecurity professionals on whom the WVARNG and Army can rely to protect our nation's critical infrastructure. WVU Tech will create an application tool that will allow the WVARNG to effectively analyze the skill sets of their citizen-soldier workforce, bringing commercial experience into the fight against the country's adversaries. Broader Army applications, such as soldier assignment, career tracking, skill development, and transitions, will also be studied. This article continues to discuss the effort to increase soldiers' cyber readiness.
