"Americans Lost Record $10 Billion to Fraud in 2023, FTC Warns"

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has recently announced that Americans lost over $10 billion to scammers in 2023, marking a 14% increase in reported losses compared to the previous year.  The FTC noted that over 2.6 million consumers filed fraud reports with the FTX the previous year, a figure almost identical to 2022.  Imposter scams emerged as the most frequently reported fraud category, with notable upticks in business and government impersonation reports.  Following closely behind were online shopping scams, trailed by reports concerning prizes, sweepstakes, and lotteries, as well as investment scams and business or job opportunity schemes.  The FTC said consumers reported losing more money to investment scams, more than $4.6 billion, than any other category in 2023.  That amount represents a 21% increase over 2022.  The second-highest reported loss amount came from imposter scams, with losses of nearly $2.7 billion reported.
