As control systems within shipping vessels have become more connected, susceptibility to tracking and hacking of such vessels has increased significantly. More attention has been brought to the abundance of cybersecurity vulnerabilities contained by systems within the shipping industry. Researchers have discovered that passwords used to secure communications systems within ships, lack complexity. This article further discusses why shipping vessels are facing more cybersecurity problems today, cybersecurity vulnerabilities within the shipping industry that have been discovered by researchers, and ways in which the security of ship systems could be improved.
