"Canada Announces Funding to Protect Against the Quantum Cyber Threat"

Current encryption algorithms are expected to become obsolete as a result of quantum computers' ability to calculate at a much faster rate than current computers. Sensitive data that has been encrypted in the past and data that is being encrypted now will be exposed by attackers using quantum computers, posing significant threats to data privacy. Given the significant risk that quantum computers pose, the Canadian government is stepping up efforts to protect Canadians from the quantum threat. Marco Mendicino, the Minister of Public Safety, has announced federal support for Canada's cyber defenses. Quantum-Safe Canada will receive $675,000 for their project Laying the Foundations for a Quantum-Safe Canada, aimed at raising awareness and improving preparedness for the quantum threat. This funding is provided through the Cyber Security Cooperation Program. Quantum-Safe Canada is a non-profit organization founded to lead efforts to prepare for and respond to the quantum threat to encryption and cybersecurity, as well as to recognize the opportunities that exist in properly managing that threat. The project will help Canada prepare for and respond to the quantum threat by coordinating research, technology, tools, and training. It will also ensure that those in charge of safeguarding the systems on which Canadians rely have the knowledge and skills required in the age of quantum computers. This article continues to discuss the Canadian government's efforts to protect Canadians from the threat posed by quantum threats.
