"Center for Advanced Power Systems Building Tools for the Future of Energy"

Florida State University's (FSU) Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) is a multidisciplinary research center established in 2000 where researchers are developing cybersecurity solutions for power systems, electric power systems modeling, and more. The research center has been at the forefront of all-electric ship technology for the US Navy, with the ship using an integrated power source for propulsion, weapon systems, computer systems, and other electric components. The Office of Naval Research awarded CAPS a $35 million grant for electric ship research in 2016. In 2021, the Naval Sea Systems Command awarded the center a $31 million contract to develop onboard electrical power and energy systems, as well as a $30 million, five-year grant to continue leading the Electric Research and Development Consortium. The Navy also designated the center as an accredited power equipment test site, the first of its kind at a university facility. This article continues to discuss the work being done at FSU's CAPS.
