"Collegiate Cyber Defenders Shine in CyberForce Program's Inaugural Conquer the Hill — Command Edition Competition"

The US Department of Energy's (DOE) CyberForce Program aims to help build a workforce of skilled cyber defenders for the energy sector by offering engaging competitions, webinars, career fairs, and skill-building resources. The DOE's Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) and Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) have announced the winners of the recent inaugural CyberForce Conquer the Hill - Command Edition competition. Over 70 participants at beginner and advanced levels applied their skills by completing a series of security-focused Information Technology (IT) administration tasks modeled after real-world support for the US energy grid infrastructure. The competition simulated a small business setup with sales transactions, email notifications, invoice creation, and storage management. Students created and set up operating systems, applications, and services. They managed users, groups, active directories, and domains in a multi-machine environment. Competitors had to implement various security measures to improve their small businesses' overall cyber posture to win. This article continues to discuss the inaugural CyberForce Conquer the Hill - Command Edition competition and the importance of such events.
