"'Combosquatting' Attack Hides in Plain Sight to Trick Computer Users"

According to a study conducted by researchers from Georgia Tech and Stony Brook University, “combosquatting” is an attack strategy that is increasingly being used by attackers to trick unsuspecting users into clicking malicious sites with URLs that contain familiar trademarked names. The combosquatting attack combines a familiar trademarked name with another term within the URL to encourage users to click the legitimate-looking link. These malicious links are distributed through emails, online advertisings, or search results. This article further discusses the tactics of combosquatting, how this attack differs from typosquatting, cyberattacks that use combosquatting, the study conducted by researchers on this attack, discoveries made during the study, and ways in which this attack could be avoided.
