"Core Values Shape Success of Sherlock Team to Deliver Cybersecurity Results"

The Sherlock Cloud Solutions and Services Division (Sherlock) of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UC San Diego works to solve the mysteries that cyberinfrastructure and cloud computing can present to the people and places served by the division. Sherlock contributes to the professional, research, and scientific goals of stakeholders such as the SDSC community, UC, external academic and research institutions, and industry partners through its variety of experts who apply their own set of skills to the division's services and solutions. According to Sandeep Chandra, executive director of the division, its core expertise is at the intersection of cloud computing, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance. In order to support these key areas, the division has been organized into different groups, including cloud architecture and DevOps, cloud infrastructure, data architecture and platforms, cybersecurity and compliance, and outreach and user support. Sherlock is currently collaborating with UC San Diego Information Technology Services (ITS) on the development and deployment of a Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) hosting solution that will span Microsoft Azure Gov Cloud and Office365 GCC High. According to Chandra, this is the first of its kind within the UC system and will benefit research organizations on campus, other UC campuses, and institutions across the country. Sherlock also collaborates with federal agencies such as the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the Department of Defense (DoD). Sherlock is said to be rooted in cloud computing, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance as it developed and deployed the Sherlock Cloud, which provides compute, data management, and application hosting services that are Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Federal Information Security Modernization Act (FISMA), and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) compliant. This article continues to discuss some examples of Sherlock's most impactful work.
