"'Crypto Anchors' Might Stop the Next Equifax-Style Megabreach"

The implementation of firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and traditional encryption were still insufficient in the protection of sensitive user data as indicated by the disastrous breaches of Equifax and Yahoo. Therefore, some Silicon Valley firms are attempting to apply a different approach to preventing major breaches of data in which intruders are trapped within the victim’s network. This approach applies “Crypto Anchors”, which involves the use of a separate computer, Hardware Security Module (HSM), to encrypt and carefully decrypt data in a way that allows intruders to be detected before the data is fully captured. This article further discusses the concept of Crypto Anchors, current applications of this concept, recent major breaches of data, along with the inadequacy of traditional encryption and cryptographic hashing.
