"Cuba Ransomware Group Claims Attack on Montenegro Government"

The Cuba ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the recent attack on the Montenegro government, which reported that it was the target of cyberattacks linked to Russia. According to the government, the cyberattacks appear to be targeting a wide range of public entities in the country, including government services, transportation, and telecommunications. A number of the government's servers have been targeted, but the attacks so far have not resulted in any damage or data loss. On August 19, 2022, the ransomware group claimed to have received files from the Montenegrin government's Department of Public Relations. Financial documents, correspondence with bank employees, balance sheets, tax documents, compensation, and source code were allegedly included in the files. Russia also added Montenegro to its list of "enemy states," joining other Western allies like the UK and other countries that openly oppose the Kremlin's goals. According to a 2021 report from the FBI, the Cuba group compromised at least 49 organizations, including critical infrastructure, netting nearly $50 million in revenue. The ransomware group is thought to have previously targeted organizations in Europe, North and South America, and Asia. The group reemerged between March and April 2022. This article continues to discuss the Cuba ransomware group claiming to be behind the cyberattack on the Montenegro government, as well as the history of this group's activities.
