"Data Backup Is No Longer Just About Operational Fallback"

Data backup has generally been the responsibility of Information Technology (IT) operations, whilst security teams have been in charge of dealing with threats to data posed by attacks. According to the global IT research and advisory company Info-Tech Research Group, as these attacks have grown in sophistication, backups have come under threat, and vendors have been forced to implement additional capabilities into their software to counter attacks and secure data. Many backup and recovery companies are now referring to themselves as Data Protection (DP) platforms, and there are new names and features indicating a new backup paradigm, thus making it difficult to keep up with the new language and capabilities. Furthermore, the frequent mentions of data security and protection compliance make it difficult for IT teams to understand the implications for the company and DP plan. Researchers urge that backup vendors' new features be employed as supplements to the DP tools rather than substitutes for existing solutions such as endpoint protection or security practices. Organizations should consider data protection elements such as Continuous Data Protection (CDP), air-gapping, zero trust, and others to accomplish this. This article continues to discuss key points made by Info-Tech Research Group on data backup moving closer to data protection.
