“Data Breach Exposed Medical Records, Including Blood Test Results, of Over 100 Thousand Patients”

Researchers at Kromtech Security Center have discovered the exposure of patient files containing sensitive medical information belonging to an estimated 150,000 Americans. These medical records contain sensitive information, such as names, diagnoses, test results, contact information and more. The Amazon repository in which these records are stored on, was revealed by researchers to have been poorly misconfigured, allowing such confidential information to be publicly accessible to anyone with an internet connection. This article further discusses the discovery of this data exposure by researchers, information that has been exposed, poor misconfiguration that lead to this exposure, and HIPAA’s Breach Notification Rule.
