The COVID-19 outbreak has had a significant impact on the travel industry, temporarily forcing operations to shut down. The cruise, airline, and hotel sectors could take this time to examine and improve the privacy and security of the personally identifiable passenger information they collect. Carnival's cruise lines, Princess Cruises and Holland America suffered data breaches in 2019 that resulted in the compromise of names, addresses, Social Security numbers, government ID numbers, financial account information, and more. British Airways was hit with a £183 million fine for its breach of 380,000 passengers' personal and financial details in 2018. Similarly, Marriott, one of the largest hotel chains, faced a $123 million fine for the exposure of 383 million customers' booking information.
