"Defending Your Voice Against Deepfakes"
Computer scientists led by Ning Zhang, assistant professor of computer science and engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, created AntiFake, a tool to protect voice recordings from unauthorized speech synthesis. Recent advancements in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) have accelerated progress in realistic speech synthesis. Although this technology can potentially improve lives through personalized voice assistants and accessibility-enhancing communication tools, it has also resulted in the emergence of deepfakes that use synthesized speech to deceive humans and machines for malicious purposes. This article continues to discuss the AntiFake tool developed to prevent the synthesis of deceptive speech by making it more difficult for AI tools to read necessary characteristics from voice recordings.
