"DHS Launches First-Ever Cyber Safety Review Board"

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched the Cyber Safety Review Board (CSRB), a public-private initiative aimed at bolstering the nation's cybersecurity by bringing government and industry leaders together. The CSRB was established as directed in President Biden's Executive Order 14028 on Improving the Nation's Cybersecurity. The Board will review and assess significant cybersecurity events so that government, industry, and the broader security community can improve the protection of the nation's networks and infrastructure. The first review will focus on vulnerabilities found in late 2021 in the widely used Log4j software library. As one of the most impactful vulnerabilities discovered in recent years, the White House and DHS determined that focusing on assessing it and its associated remediation process was the most essential first use of the Board's expertise. The CSRB's first report will include a review and assessment of vulnerabilities related to the Log4j software library, covering associated threat activity and effects, as well as actions taken by the government and the private sector to mitigate the impact of the security flaws. It will also include recommendations for addressing ongoing vulnerabilities and improving cybersecurity practices, along with lessons learned from the Log4j vulnerabilities. This article continues to discuss the establishment, goals, structure, and first report of the CSRB.
