"Evidence Suggests That the U.S. Loses Hundreds of Billions to Cybercrime"

Cybercrime poses a threat to America's competitive advantage and the future of the economy. However, many still question the extent to which cybercrime impacts economic activity, claiming the compromise of and bias with cybercrime loss estimates. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) published a report, titled "Cybercrime Losses: An Examination of U.S. Manufacturing and the Total Economy," which addresses challenges associated with validating estimates of cybercrime losses by identifying and utilizing a large dataset, as well as and applying several approaches. The results of the NIST report suggest that cybercrime losses might be significantly higher than expected. This article continues to discuss key findings from NIST AMS 100-32 regarding the economic impact of cybercrime in the U.S.
