Facebook experienced a global outage, and have began investigating what may have caused the outage. Facebook has confirmed that this outage was not caused by a DDoS attack, but could have been caused by Boarder Gateway Protocol or by other means. Facebook has been able to restore most service back to individuals affected by the outage.
