"New PwndLocker Ransomware Targeting U.S. Cities, Enterprises"

U.S. cities and organizations are being targeted by a new strain of ransomware, dubbed "PwndLocker," which demands ransom amounts from $175,000 to more than $660,000 based on the size of the targeted network. Lasalle County in Illinois was demanded to pay a 50 Bitcoin ransom, which is worth $442,000, to the operators behind the PwndLocker ransomware for a decryptor. Further analysis of PwndLocker revealed that the ransomware is capable of disabling Windows services used by applications, including Acronis, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and Malwarebytes. The ransomware also terminates Firefox, Word, Excel, Access, and other processes used for security, backup, and database servers.
