"New Research Reveals Alarming Privacy and Security Threats in Smart Homes"

A team of researchers, led by IMDEA Networks and Northeastern University together with NYU Tandon School of Engineering, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, IMDEA Software, the University of Calgary, and the International Computer Science Institute, has shared findings regarding the security and privacy challenges posed by Internet of Things (IoT) devices in smart homes. The study, titled "In the Room Where It Happens: Characterizing Local Communication and Threats in Smart Homes," examines, for the first time, the intricacies of local network interactions between 93 IoT devices and mobile apps. The research team responsibly disclosed the problems they discovered to vulnerable IoT device manufacturers and Google's Android Security Team, resulting in security improvements in some products. This article continues to discuss some key findings from the study.
