"New Tool Helps Mobile App Developers Create More Accurate iOS Privacy Labels"

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University's (CMU) CyLab Security and Privacy Institute have been working on privacy nutrition labels for over a decade to easily show technology users how their data is being collected and used. In recent years, Apple has required app developers to disclose this information through privacy labels displayed in the iOS App Store. However, recent research has revealed that app developers struggle to create accurate privacy labels. According to Norman Sadeh, co-director of CMU's Privacy Engineering Program and head of the Usable Privacy Policy Project, confusing terms, little guidance, and a lack of privacy expertise among app developers often result in inaccurate labels. Inaccurate labels mislead users regarding the data an app may collect and how it handles it. Furthermore, inaccurate labels expose app developers to regulatory penalties. Sadeh and his team have developed a new tool called the Privacy Label Wiz (PLW) to provide developers with a resource for effectively disclosing the data practices of their apps. This article continues to discuss the PLW aimed at helping developers create accurate privacy labels for their apps.
