"Nvidia's New RTX 4090 Is a Powerful Password-Cracking Tool"

According to password recovery firm benchmarks, Nvidia's new RTX 4090 graphics card is powerful enough to break password-cracking records. Sam Croley, a researcher and password cracker, says the card clocks in at a >2x uplift over the 3090 for nearly every algorithm. The GPU achieved record speeds of 300GH/sec and 200KH/sec in tests against Microsoft's New Technology LAN Manager (NTLM) authentication protocol and the commonly-used password-hashing function Bcrypt. In another post, a hacker named TinkerSec stated that through the use of brute force methods, a hacker could cycle through every combination (200 billion) of eight-character passwords in just 48 minutes using a rig equipped with eight RTX 4090 GPUs. This is significantly faster than the two-and-a-half hours it would take to achieve the same results on Nvidia's previous flagship card, the 3090, and includes passwords with random upper and lower case letters, symbols, and numbers. These numbers are noteworthy because the RTX 4090 is consumer-focused hardware widely available from IT retailers, making the GPU a valuable investment for threat actors, who will now be able to obtain more power for custom-built hacking systems via legitimate channels. This article continues to discuss the potential use of Nvidia's new RTX 4090 graphics card as a powerful password-cracking tool.
