"Only 25% Of Organizations Consider Their Biggest Threat to Be from inside the Business"
According to Gurucul, 73.48 percent of organizations believe they have wasted most of their cybersecurity budget by failing to remediate threats, despite having plenty of security tools. Furthermore, although insider threats have increased by 47 percent in the last two years, only 25 percent of organizations consider their biggest threat to be from within the organization. With only a quarter of businesses seeing their biggest threat as coming from within their organization, it appears that over 70 percent see the biggest cybersecurity challenges as coming from outside sources such as ransomware. While external threats account for many security incidents, it is important to consider insider threats in order to effectively secure corporate data and IP. Gurucul's survey found that 33 percent of respondents claim to be able to detect threats within hours, and 27.07 percent say they can detect threats in real-time. However, challenges persist, with 33.15 percent of respondents reporting that it still takes their organization days or weeks to detect threats, and 6 percent reporting that they are unable to detect them at all. Given the sophistication and attack methods that threat actors are now using , even the ability to detect threats within hours is not fast enough, as it still allows attackers plenty of time to gain a stable foothold within an organization's network, according to Saryu Nayyar, CEO of Gurucul. Of the respondents, 33.15 percent have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars attempting to remediate threats, while 15.47 percent have spent millions, demonstrating the lengths to which organizations are willing to go to protect themselves from malicious actors. It also suggests that many of the chosen solutions may not deliver the expected results, as evidenced by 41.99 percent believing that 50-100 percent of their budget has been squandered on these efforts.
