"Ransomware Gang Posts Breast Cancer Patients' Clinical Photographs"

ALPHV, also known as BlackCat, is attempting to extort a Pennsylvania healthcare network by posting images of breast cancer patients. On the criminals' website, these clinical images that Lehigh Valley Health Network used as part of radiotherapy to combat cancerous cells were referred to as "nude photos." Lehigh Valley Health Network reported on February 20 that it had been attacked by the Russia-linked BlackCat gang and that it would not pay a ransom. Based on an initial investigation, the network supporting one physician practice in Lackawanna County was compromised. According to Brian Nester, president and CEO of the network, the issue involved a computer system used to store clinically appropriate patient photos for radiation oncology treatment and other sensitive information. The attempt to extort the organization by exploiting the sensitivity around cancer treatment and intimate photos has outraged onlookers. However, ALPHV praised itself for the attack and the resulting attention. This article continues to discuss BlackCat's attempt to extort Lehigh Valley Health Network by publishing photographs of breast cancer patients as well as other healthcare organizations that have been attacked by ransomware gangs in recent months.
