"Researchers Find Flaw That Leaks Email Addresses from Apple's AirDrop"

Researchers from Germany's Technical University (TU) of Darmstadt uncovered two flaws in AirDrop's protocol. Airdrop is a feature built into about 1.5 billion Apple devices that allows Mac and iPhone users to seamlessly share and transfer files, photos, videos, and more, without the need to find another network connection or use a USB stick. The flaws found in the AirDrop protocol could allow a malicious actor to discover the phone numbers and email addresses of any nearby devices that use AirDrop. This activity could lead to spearphishing attacks against individual Apple users or the availability of bulk personal data to other fraudsters for purchase. This article continues to discuss the flaws found in AirDrop's protocol that exposes over a billion Apple devices, Apple's response to this discovery, and the PrivateDrop feature developed by TU Darmstadt researchers to address the AirDrop issue.
