"Sound Used to Track Movement via Smartphone and Laptops Speakers"

According to researchers at the University of Washington, a person’s movements could be tracked by hackers via speakers and microphones within devices such as smartphones, laptops, and more. Researchers demonstrated the tracking system, “CovertBand”, which could be performed by hackers through the embedding of a high-frequency sound into audio recordings, transforming the audio device into a sonar system to detect soundwaves. Information tracked by this system could then be used by hackers to generate an image of a person’s actions and the objects around them.  This article further discusses how researchers demonstrated this CovertBand attack, different scenarios in which this attack could be used, as well as the importance of improving the security of smart devices and IoT devices.
