Security researchers at IOActive have demonstrated that it is possible to infect robots with ransomware. Two robots developed by SoftBank named Pepper and Nao can be hacked through the exploitation of unprotected modules within their functions. This article continues to discuss how researchers were able to take over the robots, malicious activities that could be performed upon successful hacking of the robots, the Robot Operating System’s (ROS) lack of security, and how SoftBank has responded to these discoveries.
