"Two RIT Cybersecurity Professors Win Meta Research Awards"

Yidan Hu and Ivan De Oliveira Nunes, assistant professors of computing security at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), both won Meta Research Awards for their cybersecurity research. They are working to ensure people's safety on Augmented Reality (AR) and smart devices. Meta, Facebook's parent company, invited academics to propose research in specific areas aimed at addressing challenges, helping community building, and more. Hu's project, "Protecting location privacy for augmented reality," won an award in the 2022 Privacy-Enhancing Technologies category. She wants to improve the privacy of AR users who are on the go. Directly exposing user location data to applications would endanger both informational and physical security. Recent advancements in mobile location privacy protection systems help prevent direct app exposure. However, the majority of this security only focuses on a single static location or trace privacy. Because it lacks real-time defense for an extended period of time, this is not practical for AR apps and products. Hu's project will fill the void by developing location privacy protection techniques that will allow an AR app to constantly protect user privacy in a sequence of locations while maintaining precise and immersive services. Nunes' project, "Appeasing the conflict between run-time integrity and real-time smart devices," won an award in the 2022 Towards Trustworthy Products in AR, VR, and Smart Devices category. He hopes to eliminate the need for smartphone and tablet users to sacrifice speed and usability in exchange for improved security. His project's goal is to improve smart device security by addressing weaknesses in existing Proof of Execution (PoX) and Control-Flow Attestation (CFA) security techniques. This article continues to discuss the cybersecurity research conducted by Hu and Nunes that recently won Meta Research Awards.
