"University of Minnesota Unveils Center for Medical Device Cybersecurity"

The University of Minnesota has announced the new Center for Medical Device Cybersecurity (CMDC), funded by leading medical device manufacturers, including Smiths Medical, Optum, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, and Abbott Laboratories. The purpose of this center is to foster collaborations between universities, industry, and government to ensure the safety and security of medical devices against the growing number of cybersecurity threats. The CMDC was the result of requests from the medical device manufacturing industry to form a hub for workforce training, outreach, and discovery to bolster the emerging field. The center will research and develop new technologies and provide education and training to build a skilled workforce that can address rising cyber threats. The CMDC will be at the University of Minnesota's Technological Leadership Institute (TLI). In the announcement, Allison Hubel, the TLI director, emphasized that the security of connected devices is still a growing, moving target, thus making this effort critical. The new center plans to host roundtable discussions, networking events, and a hackathon. There are also plans to develop a medical device cybersecurity course and summer internship program.
