"US Hospital Attacked by BlackCat Denies Hackers' Ransom"

Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), a Pennsylvania-based healthcare institution, disclosed that the ALPHV/BlackCat group launched a ransomware attack against it. In 2021, ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware was first discovered. The group operates a Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) business and sells malware subscriptions to other cybercriminals. LVHN detected unauthorized activity on its Information Technology (IT) systems on February 6. An investigation of the incident found that a computer system used by medics to screen patient images, radiation oncology treatment information, and other sensitive data, was involved. However, LVHN stated that it did not pay the demanded ransom. Authorities caution against paying hackers, as there is no guarantee they will decrypt data. Paying the ransom may also bring undesirable attention from other cybercriminal groups, as they will start considering the victim as solvent. This article continues to discuss the LVHN refusing to pay extortion money to Russia-linked hackers and findings regarding the ALPHV/BlackCat ransomware group.
